Presiding Bishop's Summer Newsletter

July, 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Blessings to you all! I pray you may all enjoy your Summer activities. Remember that, wherever you may travel this Summer, there is likely an Anglican church within the area. As the Anglican Church in America draws closer to the Anglican Catholic Church, the Anglican Province of America and the Diocese of the Holy Cross, the number of churches with whom we maintain communion will increase by several hundred. I encourage you to join with our brothers and sisters in these jurisdictions; make new friends and worship with like-minded, orthodox Anglicans.

There is much joyful news to report and I am very pleased to report that our diocese continues to lead the church in growth, mission development, charitable giving and ecumenical outreach. While there is a great deal more to do, I am pleased that we are seeking to fulfill our Christian responsibilities.

Here is the news of the day:

Clergy Reports

The Reverend Robert Ludwig has been appointed Interim Vicar of Holy Cross Anglican Church in Webster, New York. Father Ludwig is currently serving as priest and administrator at St. Stephen's Anglican Church in Timonium, Maryland. He brings a strong set of pastoral and administrative skills to his work and we pray his ministry will be joyful and productive.

The Reverend Mr. Thomas Stone was ordered Deacon at Holy Cross Anglican Church on June 17, 2017. It is the first time this parish has had a deacon in several years. As we know, the ministry of a deacon is vital to the effective ministry of God's Holy Church. Given Deacon Stone's knowledge and experience, it is clear that he has been called to this vocation.

The Reverend Mr. Phillip Cunningham will be ordained, God willing, to the Sacred Priesthood on September 9, 2017 at St. Nicholas Anglican Church in West Seneca, New York.

The Reverend Mr. Gary Drinkwater will be ordained, God willing, to the Sacred Priesthood on September 23, 2017 at Transfiguration Anglican Church in Mechanic Falls, Maine.

Mr. Leroy Weed has been approved for ordination to the diaconate. An ordination date has yet to be determined.

The Very Reverend Edward Ihde has been appointed Regional Dean of the Western New York Deanery. Father Ihde has served as rector of St, Nicholas for several years. He also assumed temporary responsibility as Priest-in-Charge of Holy Cross Anglican Church during its time of transition. It should be noted that several years ago there was only one clergyman in the area comprising the Western Deanery. At this point, there will be at least seven. We commend the clergy and people of Western New York for their work for God's Holy Church.

Father Stephen Rugg was appointed Interim Vicar of Trinity Anglican Church and assumed that responsibility on June 11. Father Steve holds a M.Div. From Boston College and is pursuing advanced studies in Biblical languages. His Bible study program is exceptional well presented and has attracted a growing number of participants.

Diocesan News

Plans are well under way for our Diocesan Synod. The host parish this year will be St. Luke's Anglican Church in Amherst, New Hampshire. Chip and Leigh Garre have done a marvelous job putting all the details together and they deserve a great deal of thanks for their labors. The dates: October 26-28.

National News

Of course, the year's biggest event will be the Joint Synod. This historic event will involve the coming together of four Anglican jurisdictions, The Anglican Church in America, the Anglican Catholic Church, the Anglican Province of America and the Diocese of the Holy Cross.

Much has already been written about this historic event, but the importance of this gathering should be emphasized and reaffirmed. We expect it to be an affirming, spiritual and, once again, historic. I encourage any and all to register for this once in a lifetime event. The dates: October 2 (House of Bishops); October 3 (Executive Council); October 4 and 5 (national synod); October 6 (full plenary session with all jurisdictions and festival Mass).

St. Luke's Camp

The most important event of the Summer is St. Luke's Camp. This annual Christian camping experience will feature a number of fun and educational events. Father Matt Mirabile will once again serve as camp director. He has selected a "Star Wars" theme for this Summer's camp program. The play will feature a character named Dart Bader (no typo there). Register Now! And may the TRUE force be with you!
